Women’s Stitching Tales ~ Story Cloths

“Life is a journey, the destination is always the same: how you get there is your story.” Every cloth tells a story, the colours you choose, the marks you make, the marks it accrues over time all add to the memories and meanings it encodes. Choose a story that has meaning for you- perhaps your own, that of someone you admire or a fiction…spend a few moments, make a few notes before class [suggestions to follow on enrolment] and we will embark on this trail together.

Many cultures have used a flat surface to tell a whole story, think medieval tapestries [Read the fictional story created by Tracy Chevalier of how the Lady and the Unicorn Tapestries came to be and some of the meanings embedded into them for inspiration], Kantha quilts of India, Molas of South America, these are all good places to begin a little research to get you in the mood… Other places to set the mood Blog “Spirit Cloth” and the work of Jude Hill. The work of Dr Skye Morrison on the “Stitching Women’s’ Lives” Project The website- www.redthreadranis.com Our days will be set out with the mornings for active construction- cutting, perhaps machine stitching, discussion…. The afternoons will be in a quieter mode; a time to stitch by hand, contemplate what you are building into your work, discuss ideas and have a good old chat over a cup of tea whilst stitching.

Notes for preparations and requirements:

Beautiful Silks is provising a dyed pack of mixed textiles to all participants. We encourage you to start the work as soon as you claim your spot! We will send you the pack, you then make a coloured background of a certain size. A paper template is sent with the pack, you then stitch what will become your background. On commencement of the workshop, small felt pictures, stitching and storytelling have already commenced. We also provide you with a theme....'my future'.
