Workshop description:

The ecotone, the edge, is the place where we will transform a piece of kozo or lokta by blade, spindle, and pigment into a textile. In this experimental class we will learn what I call North Country shifu, a rustic take on a traditional Japanese clothmaking technique. We will prepare handmade papers for shifu, twist the various papers on spindles and weave sample textiles on our simple looms. We will use several natural dyes to color completed skeins and to brush on papers for later use. Plan to reach and let go, to work intensely and then intuitively, to enjoy the pleasures of handmade kozo and lokta paper, to learn how to color spun paper, and to make a woven paper textile.

Tutor profile:

Velma Bolyard has been making paper and weaving, spinning, and dyeing since the seventies. Initially beginning a career in fiber art, she took a detour through motherhood and "hobby farming", and then became a special education teacher. Throughout that time she maintained a studio called Wake Robin, now a hand paper mill. She has extensive experience in the book arts as well as fiber arts. She has exhibited her weaving, basketry, paper, and book works regionally, nationally, and internationally. Velma's paper has been used by letterpress printers and book artists in both editions and unique works. Her current fiber work is in miniature tapestry and igolochkoy, and her book works are mostly unique artists' books in shifu (spun and woven paper) and vellum, but include a few editioned bookworks. Velma is grounded in historical technique, but is experimental in both her personal work and in teaching. One student said of her: you are a good teacher. You let me make mistakes."

Lists etc will be provided to all students - limited spaces .
