Wool is an astonishing renewable fibre that [due to the way in which the fibre is structured] requires heat in the application of dyes in order to take up maximum colour. However in the presence of heat, moisture and friction [all conditions likely to be present in a warm dyebath] wool is also extremely likely to felt. In this class participants will be shown effective ways of hot dyeing raw fleece, sliver, yarn and prefelt using eucalyptus brews as well as bundle techniques. We will also discuss and demonstrate means of solar dyeing, pre-mordant techniques and post-dye colour modifiers.

the tutor will be armed with
string, rubber bands, sticks, found metal, prepared eco-friendly mordants, leaves, knowledge to share

notebook and writing implement
camera [still photography only, videos are NOT permitted]
Beautiful Silks materials kit for each student [at no extra cost] to include samples of Any wool or wool/silk mix fabric on hand, sliver, yarn etc to take away and experiment at home & piece of prefelt for use in class about 30cm x width of fabric
